This Is Not For You by halley42 This Is Not For You by halley42
It's actually for :iconreasonably-sunny: who introduced me to House of Leaves, mailed me her copy, and was therefore accessory to the hell being quite frankly scared out of me.

Here, Johnny Truant seems to have found the House. Or, maybe, the House found him. Either way, I think he's going to need a bit more than that one match.

Johnny Truant and the House on Elm Tree Lane belong to Mark Z. Danielewski. If you haven't read House of Leaves, I really recommend you do... if your nerves are fairly strong. If not... refer to the title.

Everyone needs to read this. Just don't read it at a time when you need to get a lot of sleep, because... you won't.

This is a book that takes a decent swipe at turning you into the main character as you're reading it- and he's like Boyd in a beanie. I got stuck in my room after finishing it because the light wasn't on in the hallway.

oh, dang, this doesn't get any easier with practice... okay.

It's about a guy called Johnny who finds a manuscript written by the old guy upstairs, who'se just died.

No, wait...

It's also about the old man, who's writing a book about a documentary by a man called Will Navidson...

...it's about a journalist called Will Navidson who's filming a documentary about his family moving into a new house, all fine and dandy until a new door appears, leading to a series of black, empty rooms which don't fit in the house's physical space, and there's something nasty in there...

...or maybe it's something to do with the lady who's writing a series of letters to her son from the mental institute she's confined to...

...and parts of it are in code. And other languages. Or upside down. Or different colours. And there's something behind you. Right now. No, don't look.

I don't usually read many books... just graphic novels/comic books. But I'm thinkin' I'll check it out anyways, I'm interested.

This picture is beautiful though, I love the realistic style you've drawn Johnny in, and the wicked stairs in the background.

It's a very good book. A bit heavy-going, though, you have to sort of concentrate, and you never really finish reading it. my copy, f'r example, has notes from two previous readers in the margins, plus my own, and even those don't make it much more understandable...

Johnny seriously needs rescuing. Wherever he ended up.

I say we go do it.

With torches.

okay, right... I will bring a rope, a tungsten bike rope that DOES NOT STRETCH. I will tie it to something here in MY house, which is sane and does not do the crazy things. And as soon as I can get to the import store I can bring Oreos and Nerds.

We can use the Nerds as markers, 'cause growling monsters don't like Nerds.

oh goodness.
maybe... maybe that's the answer!
portable housing! like, maybe the house can't affect a house what isn't actually part of the house.

We need a loudhailer too. An' I'm bringing my gameboy.

We must have Guitar Hero...

Maybe the House will be gracious
And...I dunno...NOT move around? D:

And then Johnny will be so happy to have been saved that we will become one of his mile-long sex story footnotes. :'D

The surrealism of the many many stairs just draws me in. It looks like a really awesome bookmark design.

Creepy houses are the greatest, until you get inside of them.

Oh Hey, I don't often see other people who've read the House of Leaves!

When people would see me with the book, I'd always describe it as "like reading an acid trip".

I like how the distortions in the drawing and the shadows portray the fear and mystery associated with the House.
